Bread and Jam

June 19, 2011

After last weekend’s rather extravagant breakfasts, I was craving a more humble morning meal. And so I assembled a simple breakfast, full of old classics that never go out of style, but which are often cast aside for a more show stopping dish, like pancakes. I must admit, I’m guilty of looking past the humble pot of jam in search of something more jazzy. Not this weekend though, it was time for something a bit more low key…

Saturday morning’s breakfast was all about bread and jam…and nut butters…

…and soft boiled eggs with avocado…and ruby red grapefruit.

All simple components, brought together to make something incredibly homely and undoubtedly fantastic.

Bread and Jam.

It took me back to my younger self, when I was obsessed with “Bread and Jam for Frances“. All Frances liked to eat was Bread and Jam…and milk. After this breakfast, I can see why…

Jam is just fruit and sugar- 2 of my favorite things! Always a winning combination!!

  • Hannah June 19, 2011 at 9:04 pm

I was hesitant, at first, but then you said "nut butters" and all was right in my world. 😉

Haha, have you been to the cafe on Glenferrie Road in Hawthorn behind readings? It's called "Bread and Jam for Frances" based on the book you just mentioned!

Delicious looking breakky, I don't normally go through so much effort, Brad and I tend just to go out instead, but it does look like such a nice way to start a Saturday morning…

  • Julia @ Boredom Abounds June 20, 2011 at 1:17 pm

Oh, as soon as I saw your post title I thought of "Bread and Jam for Frances"! Looks like a yummy breakfast. I'm obsessed with multigrain bread toasted and slathered with honey at the moment on the weekend. Not that healthy, but so delicious and filling!

  • hollypop June 20, 2011 at 1:32 pm

hehe in one picture it looks like you're making a hair sammich!
bread is constantly underestimated. bread rules.

  • Heidi June 20, 2011 at 2:18 pm

Ashley – yes I need to go to this cafe! Amazing name 🙂

Julia – a little honey is wonderful! I love honey…

Hollypop – haha! and yes, bread totally rules.

Bread & Jam & a nice cold glass of milk – so much a part of every Aussie kids childhood. Love it, sounds like a nice weekend brekkie 🙂

Love the photos! Yum, I love the oozing egg 🙂

  • chutneyandspice June 20, 2011 at 7:06 pm

Which nut butters do you like? I am addicted to unsweetened peanut, but also love almond. Always looking for new ones. I tried a omega 3 seed butter recently but couldn't swallow it!! Lovely post, breakfast is such a special time isn't it.

You my friend, are much more healthy than I'll ever be!

  • Lorraine @ Not Quite Nigella June 20, 2011 at 9:10 pm

What a cute little collection of jams you have! 😀 Sometimes you just need simple don't you! 🙂

  • Heidi June 20, 2011 at 9:25 pm

Anna – it was 🙂 and I wish I liked straight milk, it sounds so refreshing!

Maria – oooh me too, it was divine 🙂

chutneyandspice – I've had an Omega-3 fortified peanut butter which was nice. My favourite is ABC spread (almond, brazil, cashew) and straight almond spread. But it needs to be 100% nuts! If I want it sweeter I'll add a touch of jam 🙂

msihua – hehehe, well yes, I am rather healthy, thanks 🙂

Lorraine – absolutely! There was banana jam there too! It isn't so great 😛
