Ortigia

December 2, 2012
Let me show you my favourite place in the world. It’s quaint and peaceful, elegant and assured. It’s a calming place. One that encourages existence in the purest sense. Sleep, nature, food, life. Being. Ever since our first visit to this little Island on the South East corner of Sicily, I have not been able to shake this love, this overwhelming connection and desire to stay and be, just be.
Ortigia.
Here, our days were simple. Ben and I would wake and amble down to the market for fresh fruit, yoghurt and an espresso. We would usually collect lunch supplies while there. We’d then retreat to the rock and laze the morning away, losing ourselves in books and finding ourselves in the sea. Cleansing.ย Lunch was back at the apartment, some ricotta and bread, salad and meat. Or maybe fish. Chilled red wine was unabashedly enjoyed, which encouraged an afternoon nap. Then there would be more swimming on the rock, perhaps, and an evening wander before dinner at one of our two favourite restaurants. Pasta, seafood, wine, happiness. We’d dance home and do it all again the next day. I am entirely certain that there is nothing better in life.

There is nothing better in life. I’m sure of it.

    Dear Heidi,

Lucky you and Ben! I can imagine your beautiful days as vividly as you have so eloquently described them. I know I would also find immense happiness in a place like Ortigia especially when cooking with such beautiful ingredients are thrown into the equation.

So much to love about this post food-wise Heidi! The tomatoes, fresh and dried (oh how I can wolf down the dried ones like chips!) and the fresh cheese and the watermelons with pips ๐Ÿ˜€

Oh please Heidi, oh please my darling, you must make this your life. The radiance of you in that hat, the stunning colours of the vibrant food, oh it near breaks my heart with gladness.

I want to come and visit you in Ortigia, and be your little ones' favourite honourary aunt… teehee! We shall all play amidst the cobblestones together, and then you and I will drink wine in the warm night air and talk about everything. x

Thank goodness the warm weather here has delivered some truly delicious food or the sight of those gorgeous shots from the market would drive me wild. Do you speak italian? Italy is very high on my list but my italian is pretty much limited to lots of words to do with food (my Aunt owned an italian restaurant where I spent plenty of time as a kid).
