Brooklyn's Smorgasburg

Brooklyn is a great place. It has some superb Flea Markets and well, it's definitely one of the coolest places in the World. I tried my best to fit in when I was there this past August, but I'm fairly certain it was 'mission unaccomplished' (you can't blame a girl for trying...) And then what did they do? Just to make things even more rad? They went and opened a Saturday Food-Focussed Market in May this year. It's almost too much goodness to handle. Not that I'm complaining ;) On the first Saturday morning during my 2 week New York City visit, my friends and I headed down to Smorgasburg in Williamsburg, Brooklyn to delight in this wondrous gathering of popular and proud purveyors. First up was an iced-coffee, to power us through and keep us cool in the fervent morning sun.

Get Ready...

Set...

Go!

Just pedaling out some corn tortilla's, as you do...

After circling the market in a gleeful daze we all settled on our chosen few stalls. Peta and I decided to share the Fried Chicken Biscuit and the Brisket on Brioche. After lining up we took our goodies to the nearby grass and had a little picnic. It was really nice, plus we had a view of the city just to top things off.

The Grass-Fed Brisket on Brioche was teeny, which was a good thing, as it was super rich. The meat was not as tender as I would have liked, but the brioche was lovely and it had a nice BBQ style sauce accompaniment. I wouldn't get this again, though.

The Fried Chicken Biscuit was amazing.

The fried chicken was perfection, with a lovely light spice mix and crumbing, and super tender meat. And the biscuit was flaky and wonderful, not too heavy - the perfect vehicle for the rich flavours of the chicken, bacon and ranch dressing (yes, you read that right...what?) Having said that we didn't quite finish it - we needed to save space for more!

Some Banana Soft Serve cooled us down.

Pure frozen banana goodness, with a drizzle of Peanut Butter...

...or maybe some Apple Cider Vinegar and Cinnamon. Either way, this is one refreshing delight.

Bon Chovie was a highlight of mine - beautiful whole fried anchovies served with lemon and aioli, and a funky name to boot - "Bon Chovie". Genius.

We ended our morning with a visit to People's Pops for what was, hands down, the best popsicle I have ever tasted. The flavours are inspiring - Nectarine and Basil, Roasted Red Plum, Blueberry Jasmine and Cantaloupe and Ginger. I chose the Blackberry and Sour Cherry.

Look at those real fruit chunks - all made with locally grown, organic fruit. Perfection. I think we Melbourne peeps need some People's Pops in our lives.

In fact, I think we should just have this whole market, Pops included, here in Melbourne. We've got the goods to make it work. And we certainly have the food obsessed following to make it popular. Our own Smorgasburg... wouldn't that be deliciously grand?
